Jean-Paul Hévin – Hong Kong

Jean Paul Hèvin is a high-end chocolate store, its headquarter is at Paris, and the one I went to was at Lyndhurst Terrace at Central in Hong Kong.

Initially I was searching for a place to rest after wandering around Central, while walking around I notice this store, the sign and the store wasn’t very conspicuous but it raised my attention go in to the store as my first thoughts of this store was high-end as the exterior suggested it might be. As I went in there I found my self at a chocolate and macaroons store, then the staff told me that this is a café as I talked to one of the staffs. In my mind I thought perfect, just as what I needed, a place to rest my tired feet and some food to get some energy.

I ordered a Traveller’s cake – Quinola. It had a soft cake base combined with a coat chocolate ganache. The cake was marvellous , the chocolate wasn’t too sweet it was just right as I could taste some bitterness. The chocolate starts with a bitter flavour and ends with a sweet note, the mixture of sweet and bitter were an interesting experience for my taste buds!

This is a hazelnut coffee, was it good? To be honest, it wasn’t the best coffee I had in my entire life, but is not bad. Nothing special about this drink, a bit disappointing, couldn’t taste much of the hazelnut.

I’ve decided to order two macaroons (Dark Chocolate and Pistachio) after being told by the sales girl that the macaroons in store are imported from Paris. The dark chocolate macaroon was superb, crispy on the outside yet soft on the inside, and taste-wise it wasn’t too sweet. As for the pistachio macaroon, it was absolutely amazing. Words can’t describe how much I loved the pistachio ganache!! Over all, the experience at Jean Paul Hèvin is quite good, but bloody expensive, the macaroons costed me $50 HKD, and the whole afternoon tea costed me around $200 HKD. I guess is okay splurge once in a while.

Din Tai Fung at Taipei 101

The famed restaurant Din Tai Fung(鼎泰豐) was originated from Taiwan and is renowned for its Xiaolongbao (Soup dumpling – 小籠包). Before I made my way to this restaurant branch at Taipei 101, I have read on Wikipedia that the restaurant had been rewarded by The New York Times as one of the top 10 restaurants in 1993 and had been rewarded 1 star in the Michelin Guide. So before made my trip to Taiwan, going to this restaurant was on my “to-do” list.

My experience at the Din Tai Fung branch at Taipei 101 was unforgettable as it was probably one of the most amazing food I had when I took a trip to Taiwan. After visiting to the 87 & 88th observatory floors, I felt really hungry, then I decided to go to the basement as I felt like there should be food there, my instincts were right and I land my self on Din Tai Fung at the basement of Taipei 101.

Although I had to wait around 20 mins to get in as it was lunch hour, the service in the restaurant were excellent, the staff were attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere in the restaurant was warm.

This photo was taken outside of the restaurant while I was waiting to get in, I notice many visitors took a photo of that so I decided to take one too!

Here I have ordered, the signature dish Xiaolongbao and Zha Jiang Mian (Fried sauced noodles -炸酱面). WHen I was ordering the waitress were helpful and friendly, initially I set of 10 Xiaolongbao, and the waitress suggested me to order a set of 5 and something else so I can try other dumplings. After I ordered, the food arrived quickly, and I was able to feed my hungry stomach. I recommend the Zha Jiang Mian, it was appetising, the sauce was heavy but the combination with noodles were just right.

IMG_1733
Notice the amount of folds within the Xiaolongbao. The xiaolongbao was really good, the texture of the skin appears to be dry, as I had my first bite the soup squirts out from my mouth and the amount of soup was around 3/4 of a tablespoon. While mentioning Xiaolongbao, I noticed they have an open kitchen that shows chiefs making them, I had a sneak peek at it and the kitchen floor was very clean and the chiefs in there were working like a dumpling factory!

IMG_1735
After I finish the Xiaolongbao and Zha Jiang Mian, I decided to order some more food. Here I have order Crabmeat Xiaolongbao(蟹粉小籠包), it was exquisite I loved the combination of crab and pork it was amazing.
IMG_1736
Here I have shown the inside of a Crabmeat Xiaolongbao, the yellow pieces on top of the meat is crab and the amount of soup in the Xiaolongbao was really astonishing! As I had my first bite of the crabmeat xiaolongbao the soup burst out of my mouth! It was a unique experience!!

IMG_1730
For all the vegetarians out there, this dish is a must-have! This dish is called 花素蒸餃 which means vegetarian dumpling in English. THe dumpling was soft, juicy and fresh, the combination of the carrots, mushrooms and other vegetables in the dumpling very very nice, I loved this dish.

The restaurant also had drinks available, they had soy milk and other alcohol beverages, but as a budget traveller I didn’t order any drinks as they gave me free hot tea. The whole meal costed me a total of 556TWD, so it was quite cheap for me as I left with a full stomach.

This is the restaurant exterior, taken outside of the Taipei 101. Overall, the experience at this restaurant was very good, I highly recommend this restaurant to those who loves Shanghainese food or plan on visiting Taiwan. Although this restaurant have various branches in the world, I’d recommend to try the authentic one of where the store is originated from. When you visit this restaurant, I highly recommend that you first try different kinds of dumpling before you move on to the main dishes as the dumplings in there are magnificent and most of them are signature dish.

iPhone stuck in headphone mode

Had your iPhone device ever stuck in headphone mode? Well I did, in fact twice!
Headphone mode is when an iPhone doesn’t have earphones plugged in and won’t play a single sound when playing music or videos, it can play ringtones, text tones etc but just not the sounds for music or videos . The cause of this problem may be software/hardware problem or water damage.

iPhone stuck in headphone mode

Here is a screen shot of an iPhone stuck in headphone mode.

To solve the issue, you may follow the following methods.
Methods to solve the problem:
Method 1: Put your headphone in the volume hole and unplug it for arround 10 to 20 times, after plucking and un-plucking try to play music again see if that works, if it doesn’t skip to Method 4. This method worked for my iPhone 4S, but after 3 continuous attempts it started to fail to play sounds again, so I decide to go to Apple store and later found out that it was something wrong with my iPhone dock that caused the iPhone stuck in headphone mode so I received a new iPhone 4S free of charge!

Method 2: Use hairdryer to gently blow dry the iPhone for a minute or so then try play music again. This method worked fine for my old iPhone 3G when I accidentally dropped it into the sink. When blow drying the iPhone it is important to put the hairdryer low-medium as you don’t want it to burn you.

Method 3: Restore or resetting the iPhone. Hold the power and the home screening button until you see the Apple logo.

Method 4: If the previous steps doesn’t work, make an appoint at the Genius Bar and let the Apple professionals to solve your problem. As it might be a software/hard ware or water damage that you can’t fix it by yourself. Don’t be late for an appointment, I happened to be late for 10 minutes and was forced to have the appointment at another day

Hope it helps since it worked for me.Good luck!

VCE 2011 ESL Exam review

I have just finished my ESL exam and I have mix feelings to it. The exam itself was alright, an okay text response question, an excellent context essay prompt but a rather difficult language analysis.

Text response- Cosi by Louis Nowra
Cosi by Louis Nowra was the play I read. It is a horrible play in my opinion, because I completely forgot the story’s storyline, climax and resolution, all I could remember was that the main protagonist puts on an opera “Cosi Fan Tutte” with the “madmen” from the ward of the “Melbourne Mental Institution”. I picked question 2 it was ‘Discuss how Louis Nowra uses the opera Cosi Fan Tutte within his play’, and in my essay I wrote about Cosi Fan Tutte and Mozart, Nick and Lucy how their views of fidelity reflects on the characters of Dorabella, Guglilemo and Fillodigi (not sure about spelling :/), Julie how she guided Lewis to become unfaithful which is similar in Mozart’s play and I mentioned about Roy, how Nowra utilize him through his passion of music. My conclusion was absolute crap as I ran out of time and I was force to stop writing.

Context Essay- ‘Whose reality’ A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams.
The context essay was rather easy for me as the prompt was exactly the same as the one I did for my practice one. The prompt was ‘Shared experiences does not mean that people see things the same way’. For this one I think I went quite well, I finished the essay within 30 mins with 4 detailed paragraph.

To those who are doing Whose Reality for their context essay.I think is good to memorize an introduction and conclusion then change around the words according to topic. My introduction is shown below, is not particularly good but is acceptable.

“Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describes it. it enriches the necessary competency that daily life requires and provides, and in this respect it irritates the deserts in our daily life have already become.” As C.S Lewis quotes reality is a concept that has been carved in to each one of us. Reality being subjective is subsequently unique to each individual; with additional factors, reality can be more habitable and colorful.

Well this is my introduction, is not perfect but in my opinion in can fit into practically any prompt in the theme of ‘Whose Reality’. Here is my conclusion,is not perfect either but I will just type it up here in case someone needs it.

There is a fundamental dichotomy and the heart of human existence. Each individual has two factors that compose one’s individual consciousness ; Our experiences, everything we experiences from the moment we are born, sights , sounds, tastes and senses together to formulate a sensorial-guided being. On a more prominent level we are shaped by our imaginations and fantasies . We are like a library, tapestry of consciousness that is being woven and define who we are. It is essential for these forces to exist in interwoven harmony.

Well that is my conclusion, again this is not perfect but I hope this can help future students who are going to do ‘Whose Reality’ as their theme. Because I think my introduction and conclusion can really fit into practically all prompts, with simple linking sentences your essay will be ace all your SACs and exams (hopefully).

Language analysis blog by Helen Day
The blog was rather interesting in my opinion but was not a good piece to write with for language analysis. I struggled to find the main contention. I remembered I wrote her contention was to shift people’s view on tattoos from a taboo ,a sign of differences to a unique fashion statement. On top of that the piece was evidence based and a lack of persuasive techniques made it extremely difficult. But other than that I think I went okay.

Well fingers crossed for a study score of 35 plus for ESL~ ^^ , and I suggest to everyone do the language analysis first as you will reading time which you can skim through the passage, then do text response and lastly do the context essay. I did language analysis first, then followed by the context essay and then lastly text response, I ran out of time by doing that, I would suggest you would follow the order which I have suggested, as you can just really write about anything for the context essay, good luck!!

New to blogging

Hey y’all, so my name is Colin! ^_^ New to blogging, hopefully I will be able to keep up with frequent posts and also this blog will be my permanent blog from now on. I would just like to keep a habit of writing a “diary” from now on, you might say I can actually just can write diary on an actual piece of diary, yeah i can do that, but I would rather do it online as I can share my moments of thoughts, memories and other important events to express myself, and internet is easy to access. Secondly, I’m 18 turning 19 in a months time, I reckon writing a blog is a symbol of being mature, as I am expressing myself through words. In a way, I also hope writing blog will help improve my english, as my english isn’t that great. So welcome to my boring life ^_^
